Camden's pledge for London youngsters
Camden Council has signed up to a pledge which aims to ensure that children and young people in care across the capital have equal access to the same range of key services and support wherever they live, school or access employment.
The London Pledge for Children and Young People has been developed in partnership with young people, lead London borough councillors for children’s services and partners from the community and voluntary sector.
The pledge consists of a number of promises and young people in care themselves will be asked how they would like these principles to be measured.
The underlying principles of the pledge range from promising to treat young people in care as individuals, promising to involve young people in decisions made about them and respecting their right to make their own choices about their lives.
Prior to signing the pledge, a week-long, London-wide consultation with young people in care was carried out to establish what they agreed should be included.
A number of representatives from Camden were involved in the consultation including councillors, senior officers and Camden care leavers.
The results of the consultation and the work of contributing London councils helped to shape the final pledge.
Councillor Janet Grauberg, Camden’s executive member for children and young people, said: “Camden is and always has been committed to doing the best it can for looked after children and young people and signing this pledge reinforces this.
“As corporate parents it is our duty to ensure young people are able to access top class services and opportunities no matter where they are and I am positive that Camden will fulfill the promises of this pledge, and more,” added Cllr Grauberg.
Councillor Heather Johnson, chair of Camden Council’s children, schools and families scrutiny committee and
Councillor John Byrant, chair of Camden’s health scrutiny committee, were among the council representatives present to sign the pledge.
