Free swimming to tackle obesity in Camden
Camden Council has taken a step towards tackling obesity among local residents by offering free swim sessions for youngsters and pensioners from April this year.
The council has received funding from the government to extend free swimming to under-16s and over-60s. These groups will be able to swim for free at anytime at Swiss Cottage and Oasis leisure centres.
Camden Council will receive £148,527 every year for two years to run the scheme. It has also been awarded an additional £68,931 to spend on swimming pool improvements.
Councillor Flick Rea, executive member for culture, said: “With obesity rates rising and expendable income falling it is even more important that we offer more free and affordable leisure
opportunities to residents.
“Extending free swimming for the young and old will allow more people to take exercise when it is convenient to them, helping to improve the health of the borough. It will also help boost participation in sport ahead of the London Olympics,” Cllr Rea added.
Camden Council is one of 31 London boroughs benefiting from the funding.
