Street dance opens new doors for Camden Council teenagers

Youngsters across the borough of Camden are to get free street dance training next month, in an effort by the local council to improve health among residents and to give teenagers in the area a recognised qualification.

Camden Primary Care Trust is funding the project, which will be provided by YMCAfit.

The Strictly Street Dance project is open to people aged 16 to 18 in Camden and leads to a Level 2 Kids Fitness Street Dance qualification. After completing the 26-day course, instructors will be able to plan and teach their own dance session and monitor positive changes to the children’s physical and mental health.

Denise Page, YMCAfit curriculum director, said: “Our course is putting Camden firmly on the street dancing map. By giving young people in the borough the chance to gain a professional qualification, we can help young people build a rewarding career in the fitness industry, as well as improving the health and well-being of children.”

Street dance has its roots in hip-hop and funk dance and includes elements of other popular dance styles such as break dance, ‘popping’ and ‘locking.’

Page added: “Getting children involved in fun fitness activities from an early age is one of the best investments we can make to help tackle the growing problem of childhood obesity.”

Individuals taking part will learn to choreograph dance routines and develop communication and team working skills. Once qualified, instructors will be able to teach 5 to 16 year-olds in schools, leisure centres, health clubs and community centres.

The YMCAfit Strictly Street Dance course runs from 23 February, for more information call Rebecca Bridges on 020 7343 1886 or email Rebecca.bridges@ymcafit.org.uk.
