Camden’s Hawley Wharf in line for facelift

Posted by news desk in Local News, 17th February 2009, 3:36pm

Camden Council has put together a planning framework for Hawley Wharf, which spreads back from the north bank of the Regent’s Canal in Camden's market area, following input from local residents and businesses.

The council believe that the area’s many underused parts with poor environmental quality, have untapped potential to contribute to the future of the town.

The new Hawley Wharf Planning Framework sets out the council’s intention to transform the area.

In recognition of the area’s potential for new development – and the extensive damage the area sustained in last year’s Camden fire - the planning guidance was developed to provide a framework for future development.

Councillor Andrew Marshall, Camden Council’s executive member for planning, said: “This part of Camden Town has lots of potential and the new guidance will be instrumental in determining how future schemes on these sites are looked at. It promotes improving its physical environment, especially the public realm and safety while ensuring the area’s unique character and mix of activities are retained.

“Crucially it also provides more certainty for landowners, residents, businesses and potential developers, which is particularly critical in the current economic climate,” added the councilor.

Although no specific development proposals have been put forward, they are likely to include: Transforming the area’s appearance, adding affordable housing, and creating more business space.
