Trust money helps to re-build Camden bridges
Two bridges in the borough of Camden have been repaired and restored with grants of over £86,500 from the English Heritage, the Railway Heritage Trust and Heritage Railway Trust.
Gloucester Gate Bridge and the lamp standards of Mornington Street Railway Bridge, both Grade II listed, have been awarded the repair grants.
Gloucester Gate Bridge, located on the outer circle of Regents Park, was awarded an English Heritage repair grant of £75,000.
Mornington Street Railway Bridge, which spans the mainline from Euston, received an English Heritage grant of £11,586 toward the repairs of the Neo-Classical lamp standards.
Richard Parish, historic buildings and areas advisor for English Heritage, said: “English Heritage is believes that these grants are an important investment in London’s historic environment. From the magnificent bridges spanning the Thames to the often overlooked road and railway structures which carry the capital’s bustling activity, London’s bridges are the visual gems which connect us to the past but with investment in their repair and maintenance can carry us into the future.”
Councillor Chris Knight, Camden council executive member for environment, said: “The decision to restore these splendid ornamental lighting standards and to replace their long missing globe lanterns has resulted in a truly remarkable transformation in the appearance of these two bridges.”
Completion of this project marks a further stage in the council’s ongoing programme of works to enhance public spaces, including repair and refurbishment of the many bridges, drinking fountains, water pumps and other monuments which provide visual interest in the boroughs streets and a valuable historic link with the past.
