Hampstead and Highgate featured exhibition
An exhibition showcasing the work of post-war photographer John Gay (1909-1999), launches in Hampstead this weekend.
Originally from Germany, the artist travelled Britain taking pictures of people and places from the 1930's to the 1990's. Well known for his architectural photographs, celebrity portraits and advertising work, Gay was also able to capture moments in the lives of ordinary people. He worked almost entirely in black and white, which he believed gave fuller scope to the photography of form, texture, light and shadow.
Gay had a long-term link with the Hampstead and Highgate area, and his work reflected this. The artist proposed to his wife at Kenwood and was a Highgate resident for over 50 years until his death in 1999.
This exhibition displays Hampstead Museum’s collection of his photographs of Hampstead and Highgate, areas that as a Highgate resident he knew intimately.
The exhibition runs from Sunday 19 April to Sunday 21 June at Hampstead Museum.
