Government should do more says new research
New research reveals that the Government should be doing more to minimise the time people spend on council housing waiting lists and that if in need of council housing, those people asked said they would rather consider options that allowed them to rent from a private landlord.
Fast Trak carried out the research to identify current attitudes towards social housing and view’s on how the situation is likely to develop in the future
The research clearly showed an overwhelmingly negative attitude to the UK’s social housing situation as:
• 68.9% believe there is a shortage of council housing in the UK – only 8.5% believe this doesn’t apply to their local area
• 65.4% expect the social housing situation to get worse in the future
• 72.9% think there is a degree of social stigma attached to living in a council home rather than private accommodation
Damon Thomas, Managing Director of Fast Trak, comments:
“The research highlights the shocking state of the housing situation in this country. When 4 in 5 people would rather turn to the private rented sector than rely on local housing authorities, that is a sure sign that the system isn’t working properly. Significantly, these same people have very little faith in the situation improving.
We know that Councils simply don’t have enough housing stock to meet demand and Housing Authorities are unable to fill the gap, which is why more tenants that have a housing need, many of whom are in employment and don’t fit the traditional social housing stereotypes, are approaching private landlord and agents.
