Can YOU Help? - Tally Ho pub-Fortess Road

8th July 2008, 10:58am

Hi
I work at a hospital for people over 65 and I have a client who used to be in the Alan Littlejohn Band. The Band used to play at the Tallyho pub. I have found that the pub has now shut but i wondered if you had any info or photo's of the pub to help my clients memory. Thank you for your help in this matter.

Hi
We have searched for and found for you a picture of the pub (taken just before it closed down to make way for a new development of flats,) and have sent it to your email. Also, there are some Jazz Music websites that talk about the band and some have pictures of the band members, just type the name into google. Hope this helps. Teamwelove

I read your piece on this band while looking for some info about my uncle, Len Doughty, who was with Alan's band, I recall. I know very little about them other than I remember the name, Len played trombone and cornet and worked in advertising. He lived in Beckenham. I do vaguely remember the Tally Ho being mentioned - but not where it was. Len died in the early 70's
If you are interested in knowing anything else particularly, I may be able to recall. I have one record by them on Oriole.

"I'd like to help with this enquiry. My name is Nick Littlejohns and my late father was Alan Littlejohn, the band leader referred to in the message.

I have a lovely photo taken at the Tally Ho one very memorable night when 2 members of the Duke Ellington Orchestra joined in and played with my Dad, (Cat Anderson and Jimmy Hamilton - they were on a UK tour at the time, not sure of the year).

I have 2 albums of the "Tally Ho Jazzmen" - featuring

    Harry Harrison - tpt
    Jimmy Hastings - tnr, flt
    Mike Hogh - tmb
    Lew Hooper - tnr
    Alan Littlejohn - flghrn
    Dennis Ogden - tnr
    Johnny Richardson - drums
    Gerry Salisbury - bs, tpt
    Alan West - pno

    Daw Ericson - bs
    Alan West - pno.

The information I have about the Alan Littlejohn's Band is as follows:-

    Alan Littlejohn - tpt
    Len Doughty - vocal/tmb
    Harry Lock - clt
    Mike Durell - d bass/piano
    Keith Ingham - pno
    Bob Mack - gtr
    Bernie Godfrey - dms

The Band released "Out of the Blue" and "There Ain't No Sweetman" in '62 - (I have a copy of that single).

Please let me know the name of the musician this is for; it is possible that I might have photos or some stories or information directly related to him. I was a mere twinkle in 1962, - but my mother (Jeannine) is very much alive and well and I'm sure she would know things too. Please let him know about us and we'd love to be in touch.

Coincidentally - I am in the process of putting a website together as a memorial to my father - I have been regularly talking to other musicians that used to play with him - and I would be only too happy to ask if they can help too.

    Cheers for now/Nick Littlejohns
